Dominican Republic Endemics and Target Species
Cúa Birding provide customized guided birding and bird photography trips; from a packed 4 to 10 days to target all endemics and regionals, to 1-day guided trip departing from Santo Domingo to a selected location depending on customer birding needs and time availability. We’ll make expert suggestions and collaborate with you to make sure you get the most of your birding experience in DR. Wether you’re a big lister, avid photographer, or completely new into birding, we’re capable and happy to put a trip together for you. An electronic bird checklist and Trip Report will be provided which will include media, photo and audio, whenever possible.

These tours are designed to give our guests an unforgettable birding experience while enjoying the most beautiful and remote areas of the Dominican Republic. On this private tour, you will get to truly experience the local culture and immerse yourself in lush settings, while increasing your chances of finding the most elusive bird species of the island.
A typical endemics CÚA TOUR takes you on a 4 to 10 days adventure that departs from the city of Santo Domingo, visiting places like the National Botanical Garden, Sierra de Bahoruco and Jaragua National Parks, Los Haitises NP, Las Salinas, etc. You will have the chance to observe up to 33 Hispaniolan endemics such as Broad and Narrow-billed Todies, Bay-breasted and Hispaniolan Cuckoos, Western and Eastern Chat-Tanagers, La Selle Thrush, Hispaniolan Highland Tanager/White-winged Warbler, Hispaniolan Crossbill, H. Emerald, Ashy-faced Owl, H. Nightjar, Palmchat, Antillean Piculet, Ridgway’s Hawk, and the possibility of over 10 regional endemics and many Neotropical migrants depending on the time of the year you’re visiting the island.
We will work an itinerary for you based on your birding goals and time constraints.

Pinchita (local for small bird) Trips – One or Half day departing from Santo Domingo.
We have stunning selected locations for you to choose from, depending on your birding goals. We’re constantly scouting and adding new locations. Here are a some:
Full Day Guided Trips to:
Several sites in the Central mountains like Ebano Verde Scientific Reserve – Mid to high elevation specialties.
Las Salinas de Baní – Coastal saline ponds, thickets, mangroves, lagoons, mudflats, sand dunes.
Monte Plata area – Open grassy fields, ponds, lagoons.
Los Haitises (Los Limones area) – Karst limestone, wet broadleaf forest.
Cotubanamá Scientific Reserve – Humid, dry and transitional forests on the South East.
We offer morning trips to local hotspots around Santo Domingo, perfect to find a few lifers or just do some casual birding for a couple of hours.
Also hotspots for species like Masked Duck, Spotted Rail, Grasshopper Sparrow, etc.

CIBAO TOUR
(from Taino Ciba-o ‘stone mountain)
4 days/3 nights on the Central Mountains for Localized and elevation restricted Endemics, Nightbirds and other Specialties.
Some of the relevant species we would be looking for are:
At low to mid elevation we’ll look for Spotted Rail, Least Pauraque, Hispaniolan Nightjar, Northern Potoo, Ashy-faced Owl, Burrowing Owl, Flat-billed Vireo, Hispaniolan Lizard Cuckoo, Double-striped Thick-knee, Bay-breasted Cuckoo, Antillean Piculet, Hispaniolan Pewee, Black-crowned Palm-Tanager, Green-tailed Ground-Tanager, Broad-billed Tody, Greater Antillean Bullfinch, Stolid Flycatcher, Hispaniolan Mango, Scaly-naped Pigeon, Vervain Hummingbird, Palmchat, Tricolored Munia, Scaly-breasted Munia. Possibly Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Key West Quail-Dove, etc, plus an array of overwintering warblers during migration (September – April).
At mid to high elevation we’ll try for Narrow-billed Tody, White-fronted Quail-dove, Hispaniolan Emerald, H. Spindalis, Eastern Chat-Tanager, H. Euphonia, H. Trogon, Rufous-collared Sparrow, Rufous-throated Solitaire, H. Kingbird, H. Oriole, White-winged Highland Tanager, Black Swift, White Collared Swift, and other elevation restricted species!

Oaxaca, Mexico Tour -Fall/winter
From highlands to coastal Oaxaca.
Oaxaca is not only rich in its culture and gastronomy, this colorful region has an extremely diverse avifauna, around 700 species reported. With high endemism, Oaxaca is known as the birdies State in Mexico. This 10 days trip will take you from the high mountains (Sierra Madre) that surrounds Oaxaca City, going over the mountains and down to the Pacific coastal dry forests and humid broadleaf foothills around Huatulco and La Ventosa. A beautiful elevational gradient to be explored!
We would be looking for charismatic species such as Slaty Vireo, Orange and Rose-breasted Buntings, Boucard’s, Gray-barred and Nava’s Wrens, Dwarf Jay, Gray-breasted Woodpecker, Ocellated Thrasher, Red-breasted Chat, Rivoli’s Hummingbird and Citreoline Trogon, to name a few.
